What is solar operations and maintenance?
Solar operations and maintenance, or O&M, is the ongoing work that keeps an installed solar plant generating at its design output: continuous remote monitoring, scheduled module cleaning and inspection, corrective repair when a string or inverter fails, warranty claim handling, and periodic yield reporting to the owner.
A rooftop plant is a twenty-five year asset with almost no moving parts, which is exactly why under-performance is easy to miss. What does a solar O&M contract include?
A Greentek annual maintenance contract covers continuous performance monitoring with automated fault alerts, preventive maintenance including module cleaning and component inspection, corrective maintenance and on-site repair, periodic performance reporting, and warranty tracking and claim handling on the owner’s behalf. Scope and visit frequency are set to the size and location of the plant.
What is the difference between preventive and corrective maintenance?
Preventive maintenance is scheduled work done before anything fails: cleaning modules, tightening connections, checking earthing, inspecting cable runs and testing strings. Corrective maintenance is the response after a fault is detected, from replacing a failed inverter fan to re-terminating a burnt connector. A good plan uses preventive work to keep corrective work rare.
How often should solar panels be cleaned?
Cleaning frequency follows the dust load at the site rather than a fixed calendar. Plants near cement works, quarries, highways or rice mills soil quickly and may need cleaning every few weeks, while a suburban rooftop in a low-dust area can often go a full quarter between washes. Monitoring data shows the actual soiling loss, so cleaning can be scheduled when it pays for itself.
How is a solar plant monitored?
Inverter and string data is polled continuously and compared against the generation expected for that site at that irradiance. Deviations raise automated alerts, so a tripped string or an inverter running in derate is picked up the same day rather than at the next site visit. What happens when generation drops?
An automated alert is raised against the affected inverter or string, the cause is diagnosed remotely first, and an engineer is dispatched when the fault needs hands on the plant. Remote diagnosis matters because a large share of generation loss turns out to be soiling, new shading or a communication fault rather than hardware failure.
Who handles warranty claims on my solar plant?
Under an AMC, Greentek tracks the warranty position of every major component — modules, inverters, mounting structure and cabling — and files and follows claims with the manufacturer on the owner’s behalf. Owners rarely keep the documentation trail a claim needs, which is why unmanaged warranties are so often left unclaimed.
Do I still need an AMC if my system is under warranty?
A product warranty replaces a component that has failed. It does not clean your modules, notice a gradual yield decline, or file the claim for you. Warranty and maintenance solve different problems, and most warranty terms themselves require evidence that the plant has been maintained.
Does O&M apply to homes as well as industrial plants?
Yes, and the work scales with the plant. A domestic three kilowatt system needs cleaning, an annual inspection and someone to call when the inverter shows an error.
